Why Does Battery Life Degrade — and What Can You Do?

Every rechargeable battery has a finite number of charge cycles. Over time, your phone's battery holds less charge than it did when new. But beyond natural aging, daily habits have a significant impact. Follow these tips to get more out of every charge — and keep your battery healthy for longer.

1. Enable Adaptive Battery or Optimized Charging

Both Android and iOS have smart charging features that learn your habits and slow down charging at night to reduce wear. On Android, find it under Settings → Battery → Adaptive Battery. On iPhone, it's Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging → Optimized Battery Charging.

2. Lower Your Screen Brightness

The display is the single biggest battery drain on most phones. Enable auto-brightness, and if you're indoors, manually pull brightness below 50%. This alone can add hours to your day.

3. Reduce Screen Timeout

Set your screen to turn off after 30 seconds of inactivity. Every second the screen stays on unnecessarily costs battery. Find this under Settings → Display → Screen Timeout.

4. Manage Background App Refresh

Apps running in the background consume battery even when you're not using them.

  • iOS: Settings → General → Background App Refresh — disable it for apps that don't need constant updates.
  • Android: Settings → Apps → [App] → Battery → Restrict Background Activity.

5. Turn Off Always-On Display

Always-on displays are convenient, but they constantly draw power. If battery life is a priority, disable this feature under your display settings.

6. Use Wi-Fi Instead of Mobile Data When Possible

Cellular radios — especially 5G — consume significantly more power than Wi-Fi. When you're at home or in a trusted location, switch to Wi-Fi and turn off mobile data if you don't need it.

7. Disable Location Services for Non-Essential Apps

GPS is a power-hungry feature. Review which apps have constant location access and restrict them to "While Using" or "Never" where appropriate.

  • iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
  • Android: Settings → Location → App permissions

8. Keep Your Phone in a Moderate Temperature Range

Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster in extreme heat or cold. Avoid leaving your phone in a hot car, direct sunlight, or in freezing conditions for extended periods.

9. Don't Let It Drop to 0% Regularly

Deep discharges stress lithium-ion batteries. Try to keep your charge between 20% and 80% for the healthiest battery over time. Most modern phones have built-in tools to help with this.

10. Check Battery Usage by App

Regularly review which apps are consuming the most battery. A misbehaving app can silently drain your phone. You can check this under Settings → Battery → Battery Usage on both Android and iOS.
